Questions this episode answers

Who can attend SHOT Show?

It's a trade-only event, not open to the public. The episode lists dealers and retailers, ranges, pawn shops, gunsmiths, internet retailers, manufacturers, and law enforcement and military professionals among those who qualify. Both your company and you personally have to qualify, and for most licensed dealers the FFL serves as the main qualifying document.

How much does it cost to go to SHOT Show?

The episode puts buyer registration at as low as $45 for NSSF members and $195 for non-members, noting that fees change, so check SHOTShow.org. The bigger cost is the Las Vegas trip itself: flights, hotel, meals and time away from your business.

Is SHOT Show worth it for a small gun store?

The episode's answer is yes, at least once, if you go with a plan: specific vendors to meet, relationships to build and a follow-up plan for when you get home. Without a plan it's easy to spend a lot and come back with little more than swag.

[0:00] Every January, Las Vegas becomes the center of the shooting, hunting, and outdoor industry. Over 54,000 industry professionals, more than 2,700 exhibitors, and 820,000 square feet of trade show floor, all packed into one week. That's the SHOT Show. Now, if you've been in this industry for any amount of time, you've probably heard of it. Maybe you've thought about going. Maybe you've talked yourself out of it. Well, today we're going to answer the question honestly, is it actually worth it? Welcome to FFL Launch, the show for anyone building a firearms business. [0:40] Whether you're thinking about getting your FFL, just opened your doors, or already in the game and want more, you're in the right place. Brought to you by TacticalPay. Let's go. Hey there, I'm Ron with TacticalPay. Our team has had a booth at SHOT Show for several years running. So, what you're going to hear comes from real experience. So, let's get into it. SHOT stands for Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade. It's a trade-only event held every January in Las Vegas at the Venetian Expo and Caesars Forum, owned and produced by the NSSF. [1:17] It's not open to the public, but if you're watching this, well, there's a good chance you qualify. The show welcomes dealers and retailers, ranges, pawn shops, gunsmiths, internet retailers, manufacturers, accessories, law enforcement and military professionals, and a lot more. SHOT Show has dedicated registration categories for a wide range of industry professionals. So, don't assume you don't qualify before you check. Now, qualification works on two levels. Your company has to qualify, and you personally have to qualify. For most licensed dealers and retailers, your FFL can serve as the primary qualifying document for both. [1:59] Employees can attend too, not just the owner. Now, the cost. Buyer registration starts as low as $45 for NSSF members and $195 for non-members. But fees can change year to year, so confirm current pricing at SHOTShow.org before you register. Now, here are two very important warnings before you register. There are no refunds once registration is complete, and don't book non-refundable travel until your registration is actually approved. So, plan first. Register when you're sure, then book your travel. So, what does SHOT Week actually look like on the ground? [2:38] Well, the exhibition floor spans over 820,000 square feet with more than 2,700 exhibitors. I mean, even veteran attendees leave having missed things. So, go in with a plan. Now, one area worth knowing about is the new product center, a dedicated section where manufacturers showcase their newest releases. You can think of it as a shortcut to spotting innovation without walking down every single aisle. And if you're looking for a purpose-built point-of-sale system for your business, come find the TacticalPay booth. Our team will be there, and you can see our POS system running live and in-person. [3:16] Okay, now, networking is widely cited as the real value of SHOT Show. It puts you face-to-face with vendors, suppliers, and peers you'd otherwise only reach by email. Now, here's something our team has experienced first-hand. So, we rank at the top of search results for industry payment processing. And yet, year after year, we meet professionals at SHOT Show who had never heard of TacticalPay before walking past our booth. In-person discovery is something no website ranking can replicate. The floor is where relationships begin, and the follow-up after the show is where business gets done. [3:54] Also, for buyers and store owners, it's a rare chance to evaluate products in person before committing to inventory. Talking directly to brand reps and getting a real feel for who you want to do business with. Now, after hours, SHOT Show hosts official mixer events around Las Vegas. And many brands host their own private gatherings. Some attendees love the official events. Others find a well-planned dinner with specific contacts more productive. I mean, Las Vegas gives you options either way. Now, registration is really the smallest line item. The real cost is the full Las Vegas trip. [4:32] We're talking flights, hotel, meals, after hours, and time away from your business. Now, SHOT Show negotiates discounted hotel rates at top properties. And you can book through the official block at shotshow.org/hotel-and-travel. And make sure you book early. So, here's the honest framing. If you go without a plan, well, it's easy to spend a lot and come home with nothing but branded swag. Go with specific vendors to meet and relationships to build, and the return is real. Alright, if you're considering exhibiting, it's a fundamentally different experience. You're working the show, not browsing it. [5:11] For TacticalPay, it's been well worth it. Some of our strongest industry partnerships started with a conversation at our booth. SHOT Show also gives our team invaluable face time with existing partners and merchant clients. It's the kind of in-person connection that deepens relationships in ways that phone calls and emails simply can't. Now, of course, exhibiting isn't cheap. So, make sure you have a handle on your total show budget before making a decision. Alright, before we wrap, here are eight things that veteran attendees consistently flag. It's the kind of tips you wish someone had told you before your first trip. [5:49] Number one, download the SHOT Show mobile app before you arrive. It has interactive floor maps, meeting scheduling, and product scanning at the new product center. The floor is massive, so don't try to navigate it without it. Two, plan your must-see vendors before you get there. Know who you want to see and where their booth is. And consider contacting them beforehand to introduce yourself and set up a specific meeting time. Three, collect contacts and follow up after. The relationships start on the floor, but the real conversations happen after you're back home. [6:27] Leave Vegas with a clear follow-up plan. Four, book hotels early through the official SHOT Show block. SHOT Show negotiates discounted rates at top Las Vegas properties. The good options, they go fast. Five, don't register until you're sure you can go. And don't book non-refundable travel until you're approved. There are no refunds once you register, and the show is not responsible for your travel costs if your application doesn't go through. Six, each person picks up their own badge. No one can do it on someone else's behalf. So if you're bringing a team, make sure everyone knows this going in. [7:07] Seven, wear comfortable shoes. I mean, this comes up constantly and independently from multiple experienced attendees. You'll be on your feet, moving all day across a massive floor. Function over fashion. And eight, take care of yourself. Veteran attendees have a name for the post-show illness that seems to find nearly everyone. The SHOT Show crud. A large indoor crowd, long days, and Las Vegas air conditioning is a tough combination. Get as much sleep as you can. Stay hydrated. And give your immune system whatever boost you can before and during the trip. [7:47] A little preparation goes a long way toward coming home feeling good instead of rundown. So is it worth it? Our honest answer is yes. At least once. The scale, the connections, the products, and the sense of being part of something larger than your day-to-day, that has real value. So go with the plan, go with realistic expectations, and go ready to follow up when you get home. Okay, for more tips like these, make sure you're subscribed.
